Blues is the teacher. Punk is the preacher. Quand émotion et énergie, expérience et talent brut, esprit et intellect, se rencontrent, c’est là que des choses passionnantes se produisent. Bob Vennum et Lisa Kekaula ont créé les BellRays en 1991, mais ils ne pensaient pas vraiment à tout cela alors. Ils voulaient faire de la musique et ils voulaient se sentir bien. Ils voulaient que les gens aient ENVIE de se lever, aient BESOIN de se lever, et voir ensuite ce qui pouvait se passer. Se forger une opinion. Réagir. Ils ont donc pris tout ce qu’ils connaissaient : les Beatles, Stevie Wonder, les Who, les Ramones, Billie Holiday, Lou Rawls, Hank Williams, les DB’s, Jimmy Reed, Led Zeppelin, pour ne citer qu’eux. Il n’a jamais été question de créer un «son», ou d’appartenir à une « scène ». Il était juste question de l’énergie qui a fait que toute cette musique est si irrésistible. C’est l’histoire d’AVANT Led Zeppelin qui les a conduit à ce qu’ils sont devenus. Les Beatles pensaient qu’ils jouaient du Rythm’N’Blues, c’est devenu «Rubber Soul». Les Ramones essayaient d’être Del Shannon ou Neil Sedaka et il en est sorti «Rocket to Russia». Avec les BellRays il n’y pas eu un effort conscient de combiner rock et soul parce qu’ils ne les ont jamais considéré comme divisés. Le Blues était le prof, le Punk était le prêtre, et les BellRays ont bien écouté la leçon…

They wanted to play music and they wanted it to feel good. They wanted people to WANT to get up, to NEED to get up and check out what was going on. Form an opinion. React. So they took everything they knew about; the Beatles, Stevie Wonder, the Who, the Ramones, Billie Holiday, Lou Rawls, Hank Williams, the DB’s, Jimmy Reed, Led Zeppelin, to name a very few and pressed it into service. It was never about coming up with a ‘sound’, or fitting in with a scene. It was about the energy that made all that music so irresistible. It was the history BEFORE Led Zeppelin that led them to that point. The Beatles thought they were playing R&B. It just came out like ‘Rubber Soul’. The Ramones were trying to be Del Shannon or Neil Sedaka and out came ‘Rocket to Russia’. With the BellRays there was no conscious effort to ‘combine’ rock and soul because they didn’t see them as divided in the first place. Blues was teaching. Punk was preaching.
